I think a pet dog and pet training is just as valuable,
or more valuable than many working dogs and their training. Working
dogs do great feats of detection, criminal apprehension as well as
local and national security. But the security provided by 60 million
or so pet dogs provides an economic and emotional advantage that can’t
be ignored. Those 60 million pet dogs prevent an untold number of
crimes.
On the local level the pet dog no doubt provides as
much or more security as local law enforcement dogs. I don’t
think a pet dog should be owned primarily for security. But security
is a great secondary benefit of pet dog ownership. While I wouldn’t
put too much faith in a bluff dog, training can make even a pet dog
look intimidating. Quite a while back I had a friend who taught women’s
self-defense go through one of our pet training programs. She is also
quite well known in the martial art world and she always said a dog
was one of the best criminal deterrents you could have.
The pet dog
is responsible for maintaining the happiness of tens of millions of
people in the United State alone. The rapid rise of therapy dogs shows
that even if a dog is not a person’s personal pet, it can still
provide untold benefits to the human soul. For pet dog owners the
benefits are even greater. Health insurance companies really should
give discounts to pet dog owners because our pets improve not only
our physical health but our mental health as well.
Pet training while not as physically demanding as a
hard gym work out does give people more exercise than watching television.
In fact pet dog training can give a meaningful alternative behavior
at times when people want to engage in unhealthy eating behavior.
In particular I am thinking of eating junk food during program breaks
while watching television. Pet dogs and pet training can give us sedentary
computer age humans a reason to engage in much needed exercise. Playing
retrieve, taking the dog for a walk, and playing other doggy games
may be the only exercise many Americans get. But again one should
not get a pet dog just as an exercise partner. If you’re ready
to make the commitment of getting a pet and training it, the reason
should be first and foremost because you like dogs.
Pet dogs
provide an even greater service to humanity by giving us the opportunity
to learn about human nature and the world we live in. Dogs provide
urban and rural pet owners alike the chance to learn about nature,
history, and humanities role in the cosmos. The role of our pet dogs
as vehicles of wisdom is greater now than it ever has been in the
past. Guiding us humans towards wisdom is the biggest role pet dogs
have to play in a modern age. It’s for this reason, the pet
dog as teacher of humanity, that I thought the pet dog needed a working
title.
I have developed the Lifestyle Support Dog® to honor
this new role of the pet dog and pet training. In fact because there
is so much controversy in the pet training profession at this time
I don’t really want to call it training at all. A great rift
is beginning to divide the pet training world and I would like to
help people rise above the divisions and infighting.
I suppose I will need to use the term training for some
time because it is the closest thing we have to reference what the
beginning stages of a Lifestyle Support Dog® is about. However
I do prefer Lifestyle Support Dog® study group to describe this
type of pet training. Study group is a bit more encompassing than
dog training. Pet dog training is only a small part of what a Lifestyle
Support Dog® can teach and give to human society.
