Dog training tips 1 - 32

Dog training tips! It seems everyone has one.
The interesting thing is, one trainer's tip is often in direct opposition to another’s. You may think professional trainers would all agree on the right way to teach the average canine. Not so. Professionals are no better than your neighbor when it comes to agreeing on the right way to teach dogs.

training tip, for the average dog there's probably no one right teaching method.

Even though there may be no single right method of instruction, there definitely can be wrong methods of teaching for a particular dog.

Instead of the one and only right teaching method there are many methods that are incorporated into a particular canine education program.

All successful teaching methods work because they properly use the principles of learning theory.

These dog training programs are designed by individual animal instructor because they work for that instructor. So, here we need to define how it works for the instructor. Does it work just for that instructor? Does it work for the average pet owner? Does it work for most pet owners?

Once you pick a trainer follow that instructor's advice, many canine education programs are designed to work as a whole. Even if something doesn't make sense, it may be an important part of conditioning for a future exercise.

Here I'm going to give a few tips that I think most animal trainers would agreed upon. I will enclose in [ ] the tips I think some instructors might have a dispute with.

Dog Training tips

tip A
Use you pets name to get it's attention. To have good control of your pet you must be able to get a good orientation response from the animal. [ Build attention by using your pet's name when calling it for food, walks, and play. (Some instructors may have a problem with using reinforcement with this exercise)] Do this randomly 10 times a day. Never punish your pet for coming to you or by calling it.

tip B
Always enforce commands that you give, and don't constantly repeat commands. Don't let your furry friend ignore a command. If your not serious about enforcing a command, don't give it.

tip c
Use timing as a form of communication with your animal. Timing is one of the key elements of canine education. It does not matter what teaching method you use, work at developing the proper timing for each technique.

tip d
Reinforce desirable behavior.

tip e
Do not reinforce undesired behavior.

tip F
Do not punish desirable behavior. Such as having your puppy eliminate outside and then immediately leaving the puppy. If the puppy wants to be with you, you will have just punished the pup for doing the right behavior.
